While most major leagues have wrapped up their domestic championships, La Liga continues to rumble on. And although the winners have long been crowned, the back end of the table is yet to be determined, with four teams ready to fight for their lives during the final jornada of the season this weekend. As it stands, a 3-1 defeat for 17th-placed Deportivo La Coruña at Málaga means that all four teams in the relegation spots – Depor, Celta Vigo, Real Zaragoza and Real Mallorca – still have a chance of avoiding the drop. Celta, in 18th on 34 points, won 2-0 away to Real Valladolid. Zaragoza, who also have 34 points, sit in 19th place and were thrashed 4-0 at Real Betis, while Mallorca, who … [Read more...] about La Liga: Relegation battle rages

La Liga: Atlético seek to make most of Real Madrid’s civil war

Labelled the “new Raúl” like so many before him, he did for a time adopt the famous number nine shirt at Madrid, but success for Roberto Soldado has come most recently at the Mestalla and the city of his birth, Valencia. Following a successful loan spell at Osasuna in 2006 while still a Madrid player – where he finished as the Navarra club’s top scorer – he returned to the Spanish capital still hoping to leave his mark on Los Merengues. … [Read more...] about La Liga: At Valencia, Soldado finally feels at home
Mourinho’s second coming suggests serious title tilt for Real Madrid
“Por qué?” he asked. “Por qué?” came the question again. It was a moment to define José Mourinho’s first season at the home of Spanish football’s most successful club Real Madrid, where in recent years silverware has been lacking. Coming after the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against their eternal rivals FC Barcelona, his comments were an attack against UEFA and the purported unfair treatment dished out to his players who had seen themselves down to 10 men for the fourth time in as many clashes in El Clásico last season. It was also during a run of games that would see the two teams meet four times over the course of three weeks and this was exactly the reason why the … [Read more...] about Mourinho’s second coming suggests serious title tilt for Real Madrid
