Violence mars Congress protest

The “Surround Congress” protest in Madrid held on September 25 culminated with violent clashes between demonstrators and police. While the government has defended the work of the police force during the protest, others, such as the Socialists and Izquierda Unida, have criticised it for acting disproportionately. A total of 35 people were arrested, with 64 injured (about half of them police).

Apparently excessive use of force by the police during Madrid’s protest around Congress has sparked fierce debate. But the rhetoric leading up to it has deepened an already dangerous division in Spanish society.
