If you own a property in Spain it is likely that at some time or another you will have contact with your national consulate or embassy. In Spain, different countries have an embassy in Madrid and consulates in other Spanish cities. In your own country there will be a Spanish Embassy in the capital and Spanish consulates in different regions.

There are many frustrating aspects of bureaucracy in Spain, but none more so than when one official categorically tells you one thing and another states the opposite. Unfortunately, this isn’t as rare as you might think and the last example that’s been confusing us all concerns the foreigner’s identification number (NIE).
