Catalan Socialist leader calls on king to abdicate
Pere Navarro shocks many by announcing need for "a new era".
Catalan Socialist Party (PSC) leader Pere Navarro has broken ranks with the Spanish political mainstream and called on King Juan Carlos to abdicate and make way for his son, Felipe. Juan Carlos is known to be physically frail and the last year has been the worst of his reign: he made a public apology after it emerged that he had been on a lavish elephant hunting trip in Botswana and his son-in-law, Iñaki Urdangarin, has been embroiled in a corruption scandal.
“We’re going through an extremely difficult time and now we need a change of era,” Navarro said. “So our proposal is that, with all due respect to the role that King Juan Carlos has played, the magnificent role he played in the Transition, the defence of democracy and in the building of the Spain we know today, what we need is a change in the monarchy […] If there is a change in the monarchy, then obviously, the successor, Prince Felipe, will play a relevant role in that process of building a new era.”
